As pregnancy progresses through the third trimester, the health of the placenta and the adequacy of blood flow to the baby become increasingly important clinical considerations. Fetal color Doppler ultrasound is a specialised technique that allows clinicians to assess the speed, direction, and patterns of blood flow through key vessels — in the baby, the placenta, and the umbilical cord — in real time and without any radiation exposure. At Fetocare, Doppler studies are performed as an integrated part of our late pregnancy monitoring programme, with every result reviewed personally by Dr. Shubham Gupta and discussed with parents in full.
Doppler ultrasound is an extension of conventional sonography that uses the Doppler effect — the same principle that causes the pitch of a passing siren to change — to detect and measure the movement of blood cells through vessels. When applied in colour mode, the direction of blood flow is mapped visually: blood flowing toward the probe appears in one colour (typically red), while blood flowing away appears in another (typically blue). This makes it possible to identify vessels quickly, assess their waveforms, and detect abnormalities in flow patterns that may indicate placental insufficiency, fetal anaemia, or compromised fetal circulation.
Fetal color Doppler is most commonly indicated in the third trimester — typically from around thirty weeks onwards — though it may be used earlier when there are specific clinical concerns such as intrauterine growth restriction, hypertensive disorders, or suspected fetal anaemia. The key vessels assessed include:
Fetal color Doppler is performed transabdominally and is entirely painless. You will lie on the examination table while a handheld probe is placed on the abdomen with gentle pressure. The procedure typically takes thirty to forty-five minutes when combined with a full growth assessment — which is almost always performed alongside the Doppler study. You will be able to hear the characteristic whooshing sounds of blood flow through the vessels, and the sonographer will explain the significance of what is being measured throughout. Following the assessment, Dr. Gupta will review all findings and discuss the implications with you clearly before you leave.
Fetal color Doppler is one of the most powerful tools available for detecting fetal compromise before it becomes an emergency. In pregnancies where growth restriction or placental dysfunction is suspected, serial Doppler assessments allow the clinical team to monitor the trend of blood flow patterns over time, enabling timely intervention — whether that means closer monitoring, early delivery, or referral for specialist management. At Fetocare, we ensure that Doppler studies are not performed in isolation but are always interpreted within the full context of your pregnancy, with findings communicated to you and to your obstetric team promptly and clearly.
If your doctor has recommended a Doppler assessment or you have concerns about fetal wellbeing in the third trimester, our team is here to help.
